when we do any work against gravity then we usually lift a body upward and hence the gravitational force pull it towards ground and we have to overcome this force and have to apply greater force.
When we do work in the direction of force applied we don't need to apply any extra force the gravitational pull automatically pull it towards it.

when you lift a bucket in upward direction you have to apply force but when you keep it down it doesn't require any force
like when you throw a ball up
