anion is the negative radical and cation is the positive radical

when the element is dissociated in solution it gives cation and anion.

when element loose electron and attain stable configuration act as cation.

when element gain electron and attain stable configuration act as anion.

Eg : In NaCl,
Na loses 1 electron hence it act as a cation.
Cl accept one electron Hences act as anion.
