Reduction is chemical reaction that involves the gaining of electrons by one of the atoms involved in the reaction. The term refers to the element that accepts electrons, as the oxidation state of the element that gains electrons is lowered.

Reduction reactions are those, where

1)There would be loss of Oxygen

Ex: Extraction of Iron(Fe) from its Ore(Fe2O3)

Fe2O3 + 3CO ———→ 2Fe + 3CO2

=============

(or)

2)There would be gain of Hydrogen

Ex: Reduction of Ethanal to Ethanol

CH3CHO ———-> C2H5OH

============

(or)

3)Gain of electrons.

Ex: Cu+2 + Mg ————-> Cu + Mg+2

Here Cu is reduced by gaining two electrons, whereas Magnesium is oxidized by losing 2 electrons

===========

A reduction reaction is a chemical reaction in which a reactant is “reduced”, meaning that its oxidation number decreases.

For example,

===========

observe the following chemical equation.

Zn + 2H+ → Zn2+ + H2

Here, H is reduced because its oxidation number changes from +1 to 0.
