take 1/x+y as A and 1/x-y as b

Step-by-step explanation:

5/(x+y) -2/(x-y) = -1

15/(x+y) + 7/(x-y) = 10

The problem is to be solved by substitution.

now we have two options. first we substitute x+y by a and x-y by b. in that case, both a and b will be in denominator and on further solving, we will get a term ab which may complicate the things a little.

so we go with second option that is, we substitute

1/(x+y) by a and 1/(x-y) by b, this substitution gives us

5a - 2b = -1..............(1)

15a + 7b = 10..........(2)

(2) - (1)*3

7b - (-6b) = 10-(-3)

7b+6b = 10+3

13b = 13

b = 1

substituting value of b in (1)

5a -2 = -1

5a = 1

a = 1/5

back to our original substitution

1/(x+y) = a = 1/5

x+ y =. 5........(3)

again

1/(x-y) = b = 1

x-y = 1......(4)

(3)+(4)

2x = 6

x= 3

putting value of x in (3)

y = 2

hope you find it useful
