sec theta + tan theta = x

sec theta= x-tan theta

squaring on Both sides..

sec ^2theta = (x-tan theta)^2

we know that (a- b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 -2ab

sec^2theta = x^2 + tan^2 theta - 2.x.tan theta

we know that sec^2 theta - tan^2 theta = 1

sec^2theta - tan^2 theta= x^2 - 2.x.tan theta

1 = x^2 - 2.x.tan theta

2xtan theta= x^2 - 1

tan theta = (x^2 -1 )/2x
