Given :

  • LCM of two numbers is 280
  • Two numbers are in ratio of 7 : 8

To find :

  • Smaller number

Solution :

Let

  • First number be x
  • Second number be y

Therefore ,

➝ x : y = 7 : 8

{ Let Common multiple of x and y be z }

This gives

  • x = 7z
  • y = 8z

_______________________________________________

Now , LCM of x and y [ by prime factorization ]

➝ x = 7 × z

➝ y = 2 × 2 × 2 × z

LCM of x & y = 7 × (2×2×2) × z

➝ LCM of x & y = 56z

Also, according to question LCM of two numbers is 280

➝ 280 = 56z

➝ z = 280/56

z = 5

Therefore,

  • x = 7z

➝ x = 7×5

➝ x = 35

  • y = 8z

➝ y = 8×5

➝ y = 40

Therefore smaller number is 35
