Answer

a) Mendel selected pea plant for his experiment for the following reasons:

  • Pea has a faster growth as compared to other organisms like humans, which helped in faster study of their trait
  • Genetically, various pea plants of contrasting features (tall, dwarf etc) are available in his garden which helped him to perform his experiment

b) For first generation (F1), he selected two different pea plant. One is pure breed tall pea plant and the other is pure breed dwarf pea plant.

c) In F1 generation, he selected pure breed tall (TT) and pure breed dwarf pea plant (tt) i.e dominant and recessive is of same character.

When pure tall pea plants are crossed with pure dwarf pea plants, only tall pea plants are obtained in F1 generation. On crossing the tall plants of F1, both tall and dwarf plants are obtained in F2 generation in the ratio 3:1.

Reappearance of the dwarf character, a recessive trait in F2 generation shows that the dwarf trait/character was present in individuals of F1 generation but it did not expressed (due to the presence of tallness, a dominant trait/character).

So, the Mendel's experiment shows that traits/ characters may be dominant or recessive. It depends on the traits (dominant or recessive) of the preceding generation
