One of the two adjacent sides of a rectangle is 4 cm longer than the other. if the perimeter of the rectangle is more than 40 cm, find the smallest length of the shorter side of the rectangle if it is a whole number.

Answer:

let one side of rectangle be x

then

other side is x+4

perimeter =2(l+b)

40=2(x+x+4)

20=2x+4

16=2x

x=8

so the shortest side is 8cm

and the longest side is 12cm
