Question :- There are two groups of girls. The first group says to the second group, "If one of you join us, we shall be equal in number." The second group answers, "If one of you join us, we shall be twice your number." How many girls are there is each group?

Solution :-

Let the number of girls in group 1 be x and group 2 be y

So, if 1 girl from y joins x then =>

x + 1 = y - 1

=> x = y - 1 - 1

=> x = y - 2

Now if 1 girl from x joins y then group 2 becomes twice of group 1

2(x - 1) = y + 1

=> 2x - 2 = y + 1

=> 2x = y + 1 + 2

=> 2x = y + 3

=> x =
 \frac{y + 3}{2}  \\

But we have derived that x = y - 2

=>
y - 2 =  \frac{y + 3}{2}  \\  \\  =  > 2(y - 2) = y + 3 \\  \\  =  > 2y - 4 = y + 3 \\  \\  =  > 2y - y = 3 + 4 \\  \\  =  > y = 7

So, x = y - 2

=> x = 7 - 2 = 5

So, group 1 has 5 girls and group 2 has 7

Verification :-

If 1 girl from group 2 joins group 1 then total number of girls in each group would be equal

5 + 1 = 7 - 1

6 = 6

If 1 girl from group 1 joins group 2 then group 2 will be doubled of group 1

2(5 - 1 )= 7 + 1

=> 2(4) = 8

=> 8 = 8

Hence, verified
