The height of the tree is 11.59 m

Given:

Michael is standing 10 m away from a tree. The distance between his eyes from his feet is 1.8 m. Given the distance from his eyes to the top of the tree is 14 m, find the height of the tree.

To find:

The height of the tree.

Solution:

Represent the whole scenario with a right-angle triangle as shown figure

Let 'x' be the side of the right-angle triangle

From the Pythagorean theorem, in a right-angle triangle

=> Hypotenuse² = side² + side²

=> 14² = 10² + x²

=> x² = 14² - 10²

=> x² = 196 - 100

=> x² = 96

=> x = 9.79  m

From the figure,

Height of the tree = x m + 9.79 m

= 1.8 m + 9.79 m

= 11.59 m

Therefore,

The height of the tree is 11.59 m
