let numerator be x and denominator be y
x-1/y=⅓
3x-3=y => 3x-y=3...(1)
x/y+8 = ¼
4x-y=8....(2)
Subtract (1)(2)
3x-y=3
4x-y=8
-. +. -
-x=-5
x= 5
put in (1) 15-3=y => y=12
therfore fraction is 5/12

Let the numerator of fraction is x and denominator is y.

∴ Fraction = x/y.

A/Q,

When 1 is subtracted from numerator = 1/3.

⇒ ( x - 1 ) / y = 1/3

⇒ 3 ( x - 1 ) = y   ---- ( 1 )

Now,

If 8 is added to denominator = 1/4

⇒ x / ( y + 8 ) = 1/4

⇒ 4 x = y + 8

⇒ 4x - 8 = y    ------ ( 2 ).

From ( 1 ) and ( 2 ) we get,

⇒ 4x - 8 = 3 ( x - 1 )

⇒ 4x - 8 = 3x - 3

⇒ 4x - 3x = -3 + 8

⇒ x = 5.

By substituting the value of x in ( 2 ),

⇒ 4x - 8 = y

⇒ 4 × 5 - 8 = y

⇒ 20 - 8 = y

∴ y = 12.

Hence fraction = x/y = 5/12.

Verification :

When 1 is subtracted from numerator then it becomes 1/3.

= ( 5 - 1 ) / 12

= 4 / 12

= 1/3.

And,

When 8 is added to denominator then it becomes 1/4.

= 5 / ( 12 + 8 )

= 5 / 20

= 1 / 4.

Verified.

Hence, the fraction is 5/12.
