Dimensional Formulae:-

It is the expression which shows how and which of the base quantities which are required to represent the dimensions of the physical quantity is called the \small\bold{Dimensional\: Formulae}.

Eg.

Volume => [M^0 L^3 T^0]

For testing the dimensional consistency or homogeneity of an equation, we consider the equation..

y = y0 + ut + (1/2)at^2

For the distance y travelled by an object in time t.

The object starts from the position y0 with an initial velocity (u) at time t = 0.

It has uniform acceleration a along the direction of motion.

The dimensions of each term of the above equation may be written as..

[y] = [L]

[y0] = [L]

[ut] = [LT^-1][T] = [L]

[(1/2)at^2] = [LT^-2][T^2] = [L]

Here,

The dimension formula of left hand side of the equation is that of length[L]. Also, each term on the right hand side of this equation has the same dimension of length [L]. Since, every correct equation or formulae must have identical dimensions on both sides, hence this equation is a dimensionally correct equation..

Hope it helps you out
