by doing following experiment -
take a bar magnet with known north-south pole.Then try on which side it repels or attracts.By this it will be known to us abt the poles of solenoid.

find a diagram of solenoid from book if the face of the solenoid is clockwise it is north pole and if it is anticlockwise it is south pole

if the face is clockwise then polarity is south not north and vice versa
