let the numbers be x and y
so according to given question

x+y=165
and
 \frac{x}{y}  =  \frac{3}{8}
x=3y/8

now put value of x in eq.1

 \frac{3y}{8}  + y = 165 \\ 11y = 1320 \\ y = 120 \\
x =  \frac{3y}{8}  \\ x =  \frac{3 \times 120}{8}  \\ x = 3 \times 15 \\ x = 45
hope this will help you

PranavRS: let the 2 numbers be x and y
Karpagavalli: hmm
PranavRS: so 3x+8x=165 and 11x=165 x=165/11=15 3(x)=3(15)=45 and 8(x)=8(15)=120 therefore, the 2 numbers are 45 and 120 TO CHECK: 120+45=165
PranavRS: sorry i could not go to the next line for every step
PranavRS: so i wrote it in one line
Karpagavalli: Hmm no probs dude
Karpagavalli: tq very much dude
PranavRS: welcome man
Karpagavalli: tq
shashankavsthi: welcome
