Poem - Brown

Brown, like freshly fallen, dried, autumn leaves

like worn, loved, warm sweater sleeves

like the dust that swirls before rains that patter

like cocoa and cream, more the former than the latter.

Brown, like tree trunks without the bark,

like rusted lanterns that shine in the dark,

like sweet chikki and halwa and burnt ghee,

like sparrows when they’re flying, set free.

Brown, a colour no one should be ashamed to be,

A colour that should make you feel free,

like mud and roots and unpolished rice,

like henna, beauty that comes with no price.

Brown, no less than whites, no more than blacks,

Brown, being bleached out, beauty that lacks,

Yes, some are dark, some are white as ice,

but who’s to say we should be more sugar than spice?
