Cardiovascular diseases are caused due to the accumulation of fatty deposits around the inside lining of the arteries called as atheroma.

Bringing changes in lifestyle factors like not smoking, consumption of healthy foods, low salt intake, moderate alcohol consumption, normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and regular physical activity can help in reducing cardiovascular diseases to a great extent.

A few other cardiovascular diseases that are caused by atheroma are:

1. Coronary heart disease – narrowing of blood vessels causing angina, heart attacks, and heart failures. Affects the arteries in the brain (cerebrum).

2. Cerebrovascular disease – includes stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA)

3. Peripheral arterial disease – narrowing of arteries that affect arteries other than the ones in heart and brain.
