Process of spore dispersal in the Polytrichum is known as \textbf{elater mechanism of spore dispersal.}

Explanation :

In the mature capsule, all the cells except the spores, disintegrate to form a hollow cavity. The calyptra gets thrown off which exposes the upper part of the capsule. So that it is dry causes the shrinkage of cells and the thin walled cell between the Peristome and the margin of epiphragm dry ups and creates small opening.

The spores gets dispersed through this small opening by the censor mechanism.
