prove that if x and y are both odd positive integers then x^2+y^2 is even. but not divisible by 4

let x be 2a+1
y be 2a-1

X2+ y2
4a2 +1 +4a + 4a2 +1 -4a

divide by 4

2a2 +2/4

2 is not divisible... hence proved

parkashgaurav: a can be odd or even ... multiple by 2 makes it even ... adding 1 makes it odd ... the standard notation for odd number is 2a+1
