Explanation:

My story begins on the 23rd of March with an announcement from New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern. An announcement that swiftly changed the mood in my flat from that of quite bliss to jittery unrest. You see up until that day life was normal. It almost felt like New Zealand wasn’t going to respond to the COVID19 pandemic at all. There was no panic, no social distancing and no use of hand sanitisers. I felt like we were moving in slow motion and no real action was being taken. I found myself in many an occasion being the only person wearing a face mask in public places. I would use disinfectants to clean the table I sat at in the library and avoid shaking hands with those around me. I used to look around and wonder if people even knew of what was going on.

Enthusiastic as the show of solidarity was on Sunday night,

the lights, firecrackers, songs and chants appeared as experianced

as expressions lacking in depth  The Prime Minister’s call to light lamps, torches, candles o r cell phone flashlights inside homes on Sunday night found  support among the middle classes in Indian cities. Focused  solely on urban India, the media coverage though didn’t offer much of a sense for how people in villages responded to   the Prime Minister’s call. In any case, the invitation t o join in a symbolic show of resolve to overcome the coronav irus threat needed to have been accompanied by a candid disc ussion of the steps the government was planning to take to m anage the new health threat.

The details of the country’s poor infrastructural preparedne ness are familiar: the doctors and other health care workers  don’t have sufficient protective equipment to work with, a f act that has made many private hospitals turn away people wi th even a normal flu; the number of tests being done to iden tify patients with the coronavirus is highly inadequate; the quarantine space within existing hospitals is severely  limited.
