Q1 If a man stands on a chair,
chances of its breaking are more but
if a man sits on a chair, the chances
are less. Explain.
Q2 Why do dams have broad base?
Q3 Show that liquid at a given depth
exerts equal pressure in all direction
Answers
Q1) If a man stands on a chair, he covers less unit area as compared to sitting on the chair. Since pressure is inversely proportional to unit area, pressure on the chair increases and the chances of it breaking increases.
Q2) Dams have a broad base as water exerts greater pressure on the base as liquid pressure increases with depth. Thus, to prevent the dam walls from breaking, they are made broad at the base.
Q3) Fill a bottle with water or any other liquid. Make holes in the bottle in all direction but at the same height. Keep containers below the holes to collect the liquid. You will observe that equal amount of liquid collects in all containers and the water flowing out in all direction has the same speed and height. This proves that liquid exerts pressure in all directions equally.
