a) Primary consumers are herbivores, feeding on plants. Caterpillars, insects, grasshoppers, termites and hummingbirds are all examples of primary consumers because they only eat autotrophs (plants). There are certain primary consumers that are called specialists because they only eat one type of producers.

b)Hence, maximum energy is stored in the producers. Around 10% of the light energy that is converted into chemical energy through photosynthesis and 10% of producer's energy is transferred to the successive trophic levels, the rest is lost in respiration, as heat, faeces and urine.
