A Path-breaking Pioneer
Savitribai was married to Jyotirao Phule when she was just seven years old. He recognized her passion to learn and encouraged her to study further. She was a revolutionary woman who supported and later adopted a widow’s son, Yashwant.
A Revolutionary Activist
In a time when a woman was restricted to child bearing, cooking and home-making, Savitribai Phule laid a foundation for women’s education and women’s liberation. In 1848, she started girls’ school, the first ever girls’ school in British India. She even started a school for the children of lower castes.
A Determined Leader
Savitribai faced innumerable hardships to take her social mission forward. Antisocial elements threw stones, mud and cow dung on her. Higher caste people and men were against educating women. But Saviribai overcame these obstacles with grit and determination.
Women’s Savoir
Savitribai Phule worked for the welfare of destitute women, widows, child brides and all women who suffered from social injustice and inequality. There were many inhuman traditions such as child marriage, Sati (burning a wife on her dead husband’s pyre), cutting the hair of widowed women etc. Widow re-marriage was strictly prohibited. Savitribai raised her voice against this injustice and took efforts to change it.
