A Revolutionary Activist

In a time when a woman was restricted to child bearing, cooking and home-making, Savitribai Phule laid a foundation for women’s education and women’s liberation. In 1848, she started girls’ school, the first ever girls’ school in British India. She even started a school for the children of lower castes.

A Determined Leader

Savitribai faced innumerable hardships to take her social mission forward. Antisocial elements threw stones, mud and cow dung on her. Higher caste people and men were against educating women. But Saviribai overcame these obstacles with grit and determination.

Women’s Savoir

Savitribai Phule worked for the welfare of destitute women, widows, child brides and all women who suffered from social injustice and inequality.
