auto- protolysis of water means self Ionisation of water.
e.g., H2O(l) + H2O(l) <=> H3O⁺(aq)+ OH⁻ (aq)
due to auto - protolysis of behavior , water is known as amphoteric in nature.it reacts with acids as well as bases.
for example :-
H2O(l) +NH₃(aq)--->NH₄⁺(aq) + OH⁻ (aq) [reaction with base(NH₃)]
H₂O(l) + H₂S(aq)--->H₃O⁺(aq) + HS⁻(aq) [reaction with acid(H₂S)]
