Saline hydrides like as NaH,CaH2,etc., react with trace of water present in organic compounds and form their corresponding metal hydroxide with evolution of Hydrogen gas.
for example:
NaH(s) + H2O(aq)----->NaOH(aq) + H2(g) ↑

Thus, trace of water present in organic solvents can be easily removed by distilling them over saline hydrides when H2 escape into the the atmosphere, metal hydroxide is left in the flask while dry organic solvent distils over.
