The proprietor of the raft was eager to meet the narrator because he was a prospective client to the proprietor whom he could teach rafting and earn some money. While he showed extreme warmth towards the narrator, greeting him and offering to teach him to take his boards and make a raft of them, the narrator tried to avoid him. During the interview, while the proprietor of the raft talked a lot, most of the narrator's remarks were of an exclamatory and mono-syllabic order. He wanted to end the conversation as soon as possible. This kind of behaviour on the part of narrator makes him appear unfriendly and cold.
