As given

Rajiv bought a cycle for 40000 and sold it at a loss of 15% .

Thus

the cost price of the cycle = 40000

sold it at a loss of 15% .

15 % is written in the decimal form

$= \frac{15}{100}$

= 0.15

15 %of the  40000 = 0.15 × 40000

                                = Rs 6000

i.e loss = Rs 6000

Formula

loss =cost price - selling price

6000 = 40000 - selling price

selling price = 40000- 6000

                     = Rs 34000
