Ram travels distance x with uniform velocity u and thereafter, distance y with uniform velocity v in the same direction. (a) What is his average speed? (2) (b) If he travels th 1 4 of the journey with speed 40 m/s and th 3 4 of the journey with speed 60 m/s along a straight line path, what is the average speed of Ram during the entire journey?

Explanation:

i). average velocity = distance covered/ total time taken

distance covered = x+y

time taken = X/u + y/v

avg velocity = x+y/ x/u + y/v

ii). let the total distance is s

then time taken is s/4×40 + 3s/4×60

160/3 m/s

Average velocity = total time/distance travelled

mileage equals x+y

Time =x/u + y/v

Average speed equalsx+y/x/u + y/v

Let the overall distance be s (ii).

then the amount of time is s/160 + 3s/460.

160/3 m/s
