RCOOH + ROH ----> RCOOR'.

It is a type of reaction in which an acid and alcohol react to create sweet-smelling esters.

This type of reaction is called an Esterification reaction.

The conventional synthesis is called the Fischer esterification in which carboxylic acid is treated with alcohol with a dehydrating agent. Sulphuric acid can act as a catalyst in this case.

The typical representation is as Butanoic acid + Ethanol → Ethyl butanoate + water.
