Permanent hardness can only be removed by lime-soda, ion exchange or zeolite process. hardness: Like all carbonates and bicarbonates, calcium and magnesium carbonates and bicarbonates are alkaline. Then hardness due to the bicarbonates and carbonates is called alkaline hardness or carbonate hardness.
