Through the warm, sunny months of gay summer and spring,

Answer:
The expression Sunny means the time during the summer season.
In the cricket's house a crumb is not to be found because the cricket spend the whole summer singing and enjoying the warmth. He didn't gather the food during summer and that's why during winter he didn't have any food left.
The cricket understood his mistake and realised he would be starving because he didn't have any food left .So knowing that in winter it is very difficult to collect food as not a leaf is left on the trees he shattered his thoughts of sorrowful misery.
