Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow, also label the different
parts of the flame.
Outer zone (blue): This is the zone of complete combustion where there is sufficient oxygen. At
the base of the wick, wax vapourises due to the heat and these vapours burn with a blue flame.
Carbon dioxide and water are produced. This is the hottest part of the flame and it emits very
little light.
Middle Zone (yellow): This is the zone of incomplete combustion
where there is insufficient supply of Oxygen. The incomplete combustion of wax vapours gives
rise to particles of carbon. These unburnt carbon particles glow yellow with heat. This zone 1s
hotter than the inner Zone and emits the most light.
Inner zone (dark): This is the zone of no combustion which is cut off from a supply of oxygen. Here the wax vapours given off by the molten wax remain unburnt. This zone emits no
light and is the coldest part of the flame.
i.Which zone is the hottest?
ii. Which zone is the coldest?
iii.Which is the zone of no combustion?
iv. Why does zone A glow yellow?
v. Why does zone C glow blue?
