Read this poem by Emily Dickinson. What details in the imagery give the reader a clue to what the poem is about? The morns are meeker than they were—
The nuts are getting brown—
The berry’s cheek is plumper—
The rose is out of town.
The maple wears a gayer scarf—
The field a scarlet gown—
Lest I should be old-fashioned
I’ll put a trinket on.
The time details, such as morning becoming meeker, give the reader a clue that a person is dying.
The color details, such as brown, berry, and rose, give the reader a clue that it is Christmas.
The clothing details, such as scarf and gown, give the reader a clue that a party is being planned.
The nature details, such as the maple wearing a gayer scarf, gives the reader a clue that it is autumn.
