The reason for Napoleon’s failure is the same reason which allowed him to rise so high: his ambition.

Napoleon was an extremely ambitious man. He wanted to rule the entire Europe and defeat all his enemies. He wanted everything and was not interested in half-goals or compromises.

After the failure of French invasion of RussiaNapoleon was weakened but not beaten. And his enemies knew how difficult it would be to beat him. So they offered him a pretty sweet deal; he would remain emperor of enlarged France whose eastern borders would be on Rhine and which would include almost all of Belgium and Netherlands and parts of Italy. A less ambitious man would have accepted it. But Napoleon refused. He wanted everything. And he lost everything
