Red soil covering the area of West Bengal is known as Bhabar.

Bhabar is an alluvial zone below the Shivalik foothills where the level of water is very deep.

The Bhabhar soil is rich with gravels and rocks eroded from the Himalayas.

Below the Bhabar lies the Terai Belt, a moist area containing alternate layers of clay and sand. Bhabar is heavily forested.

The name Bhabar is based upon the local tall grass Eulaliopsis Binata used for paper production.
