Child Marriage in India is a centuries old tradition. When the 1921 census reported 600 brides in the age group of one to twelve months, Mahatma Gandhi was shocked. He became instrumental in introducing the Sarda Act or the Child Marriage Restraint Act in 1929. That was the first step taken against child marriage in India. It fixed the age of marriage for girls at 14 years and boys at 18 years. Since then many reformers and stakeholders have been advocating against child marriage in India.

New Delhi: Child marriage is a practice in India, on which a law has been made a long time ago. Child marriage is considered as a crime. Despite this, child marriage continues unabated even today in many rural areas of India. In this connection, child marriage was taking place in a village last days.
On receiving a complaint from an unknown person in this regard, the police reached the spot and immediately stopped the ongoing child marriage ceremony.
On investigation, it was found that the age of the boy was only 11 years and the age of the girl was only 8 years. Their marriage at such a young age was completely illegal. The police have taken all the concerned people responsible for this marriage into custody and further action is being taken.
Both the boys and girls have been sent to the Child Improvement Home.
