Democracy is many things. Democracy is the rule of law, it is representation, freedom of speech, media freedom, fight against discrimination, respect for privacy and human dignity. But above all democracy is a process, in constant evolution, and which it is for all of us to advance, constantly. We want to make sure that citizens can live in fair societies where democracy prevails in all areas of life and where the rule of law is a reality.
Enhancing European democracy is our main priority and we want to engage the public and policy makers around three main pillars: fundamental rights, accountability, and transparency and participation.
We want our citizens to become active, through increased political participation and collaboration from local to national to European levels. For this reason, it is fundamental to fight abstention and apathy, two clear expressions of people’s frustration and disengagement. Without the active engagement of citizens, especially the younger generation, democracy will not only stop to developing further, but also past success will be threatened. This is why we have to seek new ways to face these challenges and lead open minded debates that truly enhance democracy.
