{ A computer can only understand digital signal not analog signals.

The very basic use of Modem is to connect  different systems at same time.

Modem refers to modulator-demodulator . A Modem basically converts the digital signal coming from a computer to analog signals so that these signals could be transmitted through a wire from one computer to other and the modem at the second computer converts the coming analog signals to digital signals so that the information coming through the signals can be stored on other system .

Modems are not needed for fiber optic connections because the signals are transmitted digitally from beginning to end.

•Definition of modem:

Modem is short for "Modulator / Demodulator." It is a hardware component that allows a computer or other device, such as a router or switch, to connect to the Internet. •Functios of modem:

It converts or "modulates" an analog signal from a telephone or cable wire to a digital signal that a computer can recognize. Similarly, it converts outgoing digital data from a computer or other device to an analog signal.

The first modems were "dial-up," meaning they had to dial a phone number to connect to an ISP.
