In calamity situations, the first casualty will be the communication lines. Hence to have a fair idea of the extent of the calamity, and also to reach immediate succour to the impacted population, the IAF conducts an aerial survey. In areas closer to the Sea ,where Navy is present in significant strength,Naval Aircraft may also do this survey. The task is undertaken at the request of the DIstrict Adminiostration/DIstrict Disaster Management Authority, or the State Disaster Management Authority. The first Call ordinarily will go tothe nearest Army Camp, and they would suggest the involvement of Air Force/Navy/COPast GUard ,as the case may be. But the roles may be reversed or modified as per location.

Air Force or other Military aircraft will Para drop food and water supplies to marooned or trapped populations. Th Aircraft may drop Life-Boats and Life Buoys inwaterr-logged areas, and also monitor the rescue of people from such locations. They may para drop or otherwise aid medical, nursing and other first aid teams. They may guide rescue teams to reach vulnerable areas through logistics support, navigation support, communication channel etc. Since aircraft operate across larger areas, they may also back up the Meteorology Department’s services in early warning about impending rains and cyclones/ gales etc. The Force’s officers are trained to seamlessly integrate quiockly with the Incident Command system on the Ground as well as at State and National level, to avoid hassles and turf conflicts.

The IAF has an admirable record of serving the country in peace time as efficiently as in War.
