Answer:

Print played  an important role in the French revolution.

However, some believe print didn't really matter in the upbringing of the revolution. Historians continue to argue on this matter.

  1. Print materials like newspapers and books popularised the ideas of the enlightenment thinkers. They criticised the sacred authority of church and the despotic power of the state. They gave a critical commentary on tradition, superstition and despotism in contemporary society. The writings of Voltaire and Rousseau were read widely. Those who read them developed an attitude of rationality and reasoning.
  2. Print created a new culture of dialogue and debate. Everything was questioned and re-evaluated. People looked at the world with a new view of criticism and questioning in their eyes.
  3. By the 1780s, there was an outpouring of literature, cartoons and caricatures which circulated everywhere. These caricatures showed how the lower classes did all the hard-work and how the monarchy and the rich was only involved in sensual pleasures; which led to the growth of hostile sentiments against the monarchy.  In this way, print helped people to think differently.
