farms out of prairies and forests. All of humans'
varied activities transforms forests, grasslands,
wetlands, river basins, etc. into less complex and
in many cases (e.g., pavement and lawns)
essentially sterile areas. These human
transformed areas are now roughly HALF of the
land area of the entire planet and are increasing.
