The wastewater which remains behind after the treatment process is disinfected using chemicals in order to kill the microbes and remove the toxins.

This is then released into the nearby water bodies.

The treated water, known as the effluent, is released in the water bodies as freshwater since it is not potable.

The sludge is treated carefully to remove the toxins and then it is used as fertilizers.
