In humans, female produces similar ova containing X-Chromosme while male produces two different types of sperm containing X-chromosome or Y- chromosome. During fusion, the type of chromosome of the male determines the sex of the offspring. The fusion of egg (X) with sperm having Y chromosome results in male while sperm having X-chromosome results in a female.
So, it is entirely genetically determined.
