Instances of romance can be seen in the way Bassanio introduces Potia to the audience in the Act 1 scene 1 ------- "In Belmont is a lady...........fairer than that word". In the next scene when the moment Nerissa refers to Bass. and Poria rememebers Bass. instantly shows that BAssanio is still fresh in her mind.
Later when Lorenzo and Jessica run away and elope, it shows that love can blossom irrespective of religion.

Whenever there is a scene which invokes tension (eg. Antonio's trial scene [Act 4 scene 1], comedic elements come into play like the Ring episode [Act 5 scene 1], thus relieving the tension and adding a laugh to the play. Infact it is the Ring episode which classifies this play as a comedy.

Thus Shakespeare has struck a fine balance of love romance and comedy in the merchant of venice.
