Question:

A ship covers a distance of 480 km in three hours. If Its speed is reduced by 40 km/h, how much time will the ship take to cover the same distance?

Answer:

The ship will take 4 hours  to cover the distance.

Given:

Distance covered by the ship = 480 km.

Time taken by the ship = 3 hours.

In later time the speed of the ship gets reduced by 40 km/h.

To find:

If the speed of the ship gets reduced by 40 km/h then, how much time will the ship take to cover the same distance?

Explanation:

Case-1:

Distance covered by the ship = 480 km.

Time taken by the ship = 3 hours.

Hence,

Speed = \frac{Distance}{Time}

         = (480÷3) km/h

         = 160 km/h

∴ The speed of the ship was 160 km/h.

Case-2:

When the speed gets reduced by 40 km/h then the speed of the ship becomes_

(160 - 40) km/h

= 120 km/h

Distance covered by the ship = 480 km.

We know that,

Speed = \frac{Distance}{Time}

Time = \frac{Distance}{Speed}

             = \frac{480}{120}

           = 4 hours.

∴ It will take 4 hours by the ship to cover the distance.
