Kamrup in the Imperial period was surrounded on the westward by Goalpara, on the northland by Bhutan, on the southland by the Khasi hills, on the east by Darrang and now by Nowgong.
In Kamrup, all the three categories of rice- Ahu, bao, and salt was cultivated. The land interest rates under the new agreement of 1892 led to a comprehensive discontentment among the farmers of the Brahmaputra valley.
The new agreement established the land value at the fixed rates Initially, in the Brahmaputra valley, the changed rates associated an enrichment of 53 percent on average but in many villages, it was as unusual as 70 to 100% which caused outrage among the cultivators.
The Chief Commissioner though, in the beginning, rejected the complaints of ryots but eventually passed mandates to decrease the rates up to 3 7%.
But the peasants were not convinced at this and demanded suspension of the collection even at that lowered rate till the last ordinances of the government of India on the pending appeals were obtained.
The farmers when again after 1861 found the administration ruthlessly demanding higher rates of tax, which rose in resistance towards the end of the 19th century. Later series of demonstrations started in December 1893.
On 30 December 1893, there was an extensive gathering at Rangia where about 2500 to 3000 people joined. This extensive gathering held protest all midnight and approached the destruction of the Thana.
January 28, 1894, was the black day not only for the population of Patharughat but also for the Brahmaputra valley where about 140 innocent farmers were shooted with bullets on their chests. Determined to smash the movement, the aggressive Deputy Commissioner of Darrang reported at Patharughat with a force.
