Scholar revolt: Christianity introduced by French missionaries was intolerant to the Vietnamese religious practices and try to change them. From the 18th century many religious movements started against the spread of catholicism. Such a movement was called scholar Revolt in 1868.

The Revolt was led by the officials at the Imperial Court angered by the spread of catholicism and French power. They led a General uprising in Ngu An and Ha Tien provinces where over a thousand catholics were killed.
