Kabir Das was an Indian saint and mystic poet who lived during the 15th century. He is an essential saint in not just Hinduism and Islam but also Sikhism.
Many scholars attribute his writings to have had a major impact on the development of Bhakti movement associated with Hinduism.
Kabir was a great composer, and he wrote pieces in simple styles that excited many people. Kabir composed his poems in an assortment of Hindi, Braj, and Avadhi.
Kabir Das is believed to have been born to a weaver couple Neeru and Neema, somewhere near Varanasi in the 15th century. He was never educated.
The poems composed by Kabir touched on different elements of life such as the social and cultural aspect as well as calling people to show dedication and devotion to God. He also advocated for discipline within the society.
Famous songs like ‘Moko Kahan dhoode re bande’ and dohas such as ‘ Nindak niyare rakhiye’ are often quoted and sung even today because of their timeless relevance. His works have been translated in various languages with his Beejak, Dohas, and Granthavali. Guru Rabindranath Tagore translated 101 poetry by Kabir into English.
Kabir das believed that God is to be found within and any external action is futile unless one looks within.
Kabir Das left behind a great legacy as far as literature is concerned. His compositions in poetry, as well as music, continue to have social impacts on Indian even today. Although Kabir was persecuted in his lifetime, he inspired many followers who are now known as Kabir Panthis.
