short note on rusting of irons
Answers
You must have observed that a brownish red coating is formed on an iron object when left exposed to air and moisture. This flaky reddish - brown layer is called rust. The process is known as rusting. Rusting is an example of a chemical change in which iron reacts with oxygen and water to form a new substance, rust (iron oxide). It is not possible to get the iron back from rust. It is represented by the following chemical reaction :-
Iron + Oxygen + water —> Rust (iron oxide)
Fe + O2 + H2O —> Fe2O3.xH20
With time, the layer of rust falls off, exposing the inner surface of iron on which new layer of rust develops .Thus, rust slowly etc away the metal. Iron is used in making a large number of things such as vehicles, ships and buildings. Thus, rusting poses a major problem. If appropriate steps are not taken, rusting might lead to huge monetary losses.
