Subsistence crisis is a situation in which the basic needs of people are in danger. In French the following situations led to subsistence crisis--:

Population increased from 23 million in 1715 to 28 million in 1789. As population increased the demand for food grains also increased. So increase in demand of food grains also led to subsistence crisis. And laboures income was fixed by the owner of the shops but that income doesn't keep pace with the increasing demand of food grains and the risen prices. And when any natural disaster came the crops were destroyed which added fuel to fire.
