Java is an island in Indonesia. The Kalang community of Java was skilled woodcutters and they practiced Jhum farming or shifting cultivation. The Kalang community was so significant that when the empire of Java split, they were equally divided between the new kingdoms. They were an essential part of the empire as without them it was quite difficult to harvest teak and building palaces for Kings. In fact, they were hired by the Dutch administration.
